MT. HOLLY, NC — After months of speculation and what some have described as “uncontrollable wishful thinking,” international home goods giant IKEA has officially confirmed plans to open a new IKEA Outlet in Mt. Holly, North Carolina.

According to a press release issued early Tuesday morning, the new outlet will be located at 801 W Central Avenue, repurposing a long-vacant industrial site. The Mt. Holly location will serve as IKEA’s first outlet concept in North Carolina and only the third in the United States.

“We’re excited to bring a more affordable IKEA experience to communities like Mt. Holly,” said Lena Norström, Senior VP of North American Expansion, IKEA Group. “It’s time the west side of Charlotte got some Swedish love.”

The outlet will feature discounted home furnishings, returned showroom items, overstocks, and seasonal limited-run products. Shoppers can also expect a grab-and-go meatball counter, minimalist loading zones, and a smaller warehouse footprint designed to serve the surrounding communities without the traffic headaches of a full IKEA superstore.

A “Concept Store” That’s Actually Happening?

While IKEA has piloted smaller format stores in cities like New York and Vienna, the Mt. Holly store is set to be the first official “IKEA Outlet” to launch with a dedicated brick-and-mortar presence.

Early concept renderings (see above) show a familiar blue facade with the bold yellow IKEA lettering—but this time, accompanied by the words “Outlet Mt. Holly,” signaling the company’s intentional nod to the local community.

City officials expressed their enthusiasm on social media, with one representative commenting:

“This puts Mt. Holly on the map. And by map, we mean Google Maps with 4.9 stars.”

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with a target opening date of Spring 2026.

A Few Highlights from the IKEA Mt. Holly Project:

  • Curated inventory of discounted IKEA classics

  • Seasonal clearance sections

  • A walk-up Swedish meatball counter (yes, really)

  • Simplified checkout, smaller footprint, and same-day pickup

  • Designed for Gaston County shoppers, not interstate traffic

Wow. You’re committed. You must really want an IKEA nearby.

So here’s the part where we gently break the news…

There is no IKEA Outlet coming to Mt. Holly.

This entire article is fake.

A heartfelt, high-effort, mildly ridiculous April Fools prank brought to you by someone who wishes this was real just as much as you do.

This is the annual April 1st prank from Kirk Brown at KB Creative, a local branding studio that dreams up logos, brand campaigns, and—apparently—entire fictional Scandinavian retail expansions.

No outlet. No meatball kiosk.

But hey, at least you got a good story out of it. And maybe a little hope for the future.

Please don’t sue us, IKEA. We love you.
We eat the meatballs. We assemble the furniture. We skip step 3 just like everyone else.
